The Annual "A" shift Party

This is a group shot of the 64th consecutive annual "A" shift Party. The "A" shift party was created in 1947 by the African American Firefighters that were assigned to the "A" shift of Fire Stations 30 & 14 on Central Avenue. The idea was to have a holiday party just for the guys. The party would get started at 4pm and go until the last man left. Wince King would host it at his home and his wife would cook for the fellas.

After Mrs. King passed away, the Stentorians stepped in and sponsored the catering of the food. Today the party has continued and never missed a year. The old Stentorians that are still with us, make the trek to Wince's home in the "Dons" (Near Baldwin Hills). The younger firefighters on the job also come out and meet the older and more seasoned veterans. Stories of the "Central Avenue Fire Department", as Wally Decuir a retired Firefighter and original Stentorian called themselves, would flourish through out the evening.

Old pranks, big fires, foot races and everything else under the sun would be told. A good time is always had by all. Retired and active, Chief officers and company officers, firefighters and rookies are all welcome at the "A" shift party. It is truly an historical event.
